BOTOX® Cosmetic is a safe and effective therapy that eliminates facial wrinkles and frown lines.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is the trade name of Botulinum Toxin Type A, a natural purified protein.  It is injected into the muscle and blocks nerve impulses weakening muscles to relax wrinkles and give the face a rejuvenated look.

Where can BOTOX® Cosmetic be injected?

The most common areas of use of BOTOX® Cosmetic are the frown lines between the eyebrows, the horizontal forehead lines, and the crow’s feet, around the eyes.  It can also by used for headaches, excessive sweating under the arms, neck muscle spasms and for TMJ to prevent grinding of teeth.

When Does BOTOX® Cosmetic start to work, and how long does it last?

The results of your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will begin to appear in 3-4 days but some areas may take up to 14 days to see the full effect.  The effect will last three to four months, after which the treated muscles will gradually regain their action. When the frown line starts to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired results.  After the first or second year of usage the results begin to last 6 months and often the dosage required diminishes.

How safe is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used safely and successfully in ophthalmology for over 10 years, and for wrinkle therapy for over 6 years.  It has been used since 1976 for treating muscle contractions in infants with cerebral palsy beginning at age 2 years old. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the only possible side effects are temporary and localized to the area of injection.

Are There Any Side Effects?ia

As with any injection, there can be temporary swelling, redness, bruising, headache or local discomfort. Rarely, patients have been reported to develop a slight lowering of the eyelid, or slight lowering of the forehead. This is temporary and resolves in a few weeks.    It does not reduce the action of the muscles of facial expression distant from the site of treatment. Patients with neuromuscular disorder should inform their doctor before therapy. BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment should not be administered to women who are pregnant.
